One manuscript copy (1 vol. 299 pp.) of the 1839 edition of John Clare's "Shepherd's calendar with village stories and other poems" transcribed by G. Silverlock and presented to his son Orestes Silverlock. The text includes an introduction from "Village minstrel" as well as poems from other works by Clare. The work is written in fine calligraphy and includes a hand drawn frontispiece, title page, and publishers advertisements. Accompanying the manuscript is one item of correspondence from E. Blunden to Mrs. Wrangham discussing the text.

The Forbes family fonds contains records related to the Forbes, Buck, Land, Wilson, and Kaufman families, predominately created, and accumulated by Betty Forbes. The material primarily documents the personal lives of Millicent Lyall Forbes, George Alexander Forbes and their twin daughters Betty Forbes and Peg Forbes in Hespeler (now Cambridge), Ontario. This includes items related to their education, careers, and recreational activities such as camping. In addition, the fonds contains material related to extended family members and friends. Records include correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs and photograph albums, press clippings, ephemera, diaries, and notebooks.

The collection is made up of approximately 600 books, periodicals, and ephemera related to spiritualism, psychic phenomena, and alternative religious movements. The book collection complements the archival portion of the donation, the Fred and Minnie Maines fonds.

The collection includes the library maintained by the Church of Divine Revelation and the Radiant Healing Centre, established by Newton and Jenny Pincock in St. Catharines. Fred and Minnie Maines continued to add to the collection over the years.

Many titles in the field of spiritualism are represented, such as B. F. Austin's The Prophet of Nazareth and the Seer of Poughkeepsie (Los Angeles: B. F. Austin, n.d.); Albert Durrant Watson's The Twentieth Plane (Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1918); Florence Marryat's There is no Death (London: Rider, 1920); Thirty Years Among the Dead, by Carl A. Wickland (Los Angeles: National Psychological Institute, 1924); and several works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Several copies of Jenny Pincock's seance accounts, Trails of Truth (Los Angeles: Austin, 1930), are available, along with the original manuscript and notes.

Also present are numerous journals from the spiritualist community, such as Light: a Journal of Spiritualism, Psychical, Occult and Mystical Research, The Occult Digest, and Two Worlds: Monthly Magazine Featuring Spiritualism and the Supernormal. A complete run of Progression, published by the Radiant Healing Centre is present. Other subjects represented include the Theosophical Society, psychic healing, numerology, and vegetarianism.

Titles of Canadian literary interest include several first editions of works by E. J. Pratt (many of which are dedicated to Jenny Pincock and her husband, Newton, a childhood friend of Pratt's), a copy of Elsie Pomeroy's Sir Charles G. D. Roberts: a Biography (Toronto: Ryerson, 1943) which contains a dedication inscription to Jenny Pincock from Roberts' widow, Joan, and Jenny Pincock's own book of poetry, Hidden Springs (Privately printed, 1950), with an introduction by E. J. Pratt.

Fonds consists of ephemera relating to the unionization of furniture makers and woodworkers in the Kitchener, Stratford, and Woodstock area. Includes a mock liberty bond for the defence of workers arrested protesting, a card promoting socialist industrial unionism, a handbill outlining union desires, a letter from Canada Furniture Manufacturers regarding an adjustment to pay rates, a handbill encouraging furniture workers to unionize, and a photocopy of a letter to Herman Kreuger.

Fonds consists of material relating to the life and career of George Elmore Reaman. His position as superintendent of the Bowmanville Training School for Boys and later of the Glen Lawrence School is represented by clippings, photographs and ephemera. His interest in a wide variety of topics, including psychology, education, agriculture and history are represented by correspondence, research files and manuscripts. Typescripts of two unpublished novels "What Sorrow Beyond Sorrows" and "Strangers on the Earth" are also present. Fonds is arranged in eight series as follows:

One accounts book kept by George W. Neale between the period 1850-1874. It is likely that Neale lived in the region of Loudon, New Hampshire and did business with those nearby. Others named in his account book include Newel Lovering, Luther Copp, S. Neale, Benjamin Neale, Samuel B. Lovering, Alonzo B. Lovering, Alvin S. Taylor, Isaac B. Giddings, Stephen Moore, John Messer, Warren Gleason, and Dick Rogers.

Fonds consists of one 141 page carbon typescript of "Among the beavers: Canadians and others" by Gladys Lillian King. The work is a personal narrative of the work done by the Military Women Police in and around the Beaver Hut in the Strand, London. Also includes two photographs of King with others.

Fonds consists of materials created and accumulated by Gordon Good, primarily during the time he was employed by The Kaufman Rubber Company. Includes materials from Kaufman Rubber, as well as local and national history materials accumulated by Good. Fonds contains time books, ephemera, clippings, catalogues, rubber information and strike materials from Kaufman Rubber as well as materials relating to World War Two, Kitchener history and Canadian politics.

Fonds consists of records relating to the history, administration, and operations of Greb Industries Limited and its predecessors, the Greb Shoe Company Limited and the Berlin Shoe Manufacuring Company Limited, as well as its subsidiary companies. Includes letters patent and by-laws, minutes, financial statements, annual reports, correspondence and memoranda, legal documents, press clippings, newsletters, reports, presentations, advertisements, photographs, ephemera, and audio and video recordings.

Collected by Gustav Seide, this collection includes primarily works by 19th century German mystic Jakob Lorber and his circle such as Gottfried Mayerhofer. Also included are works by other mystics including Emanuel Swedenborg and religious texts including the Bhagavad Gita. Of particular note is a complete set of Lorber’s seminal work “Das große Evangelium Johannis” of the Great Gospel of John.

Fonds consists of the correspondence of H. Stanley Smart to his family in Grassie, Ontario, written while he was stationed in England during World War II. Includes letters, airgraph letters, postcards, a telegram, and a roll of honour. The correspondence covers Smart's time in Europe from the first letter after his arrival in England (dated December 20, 1942) to the last letter before he sailed back to Canada (dated December 19, 1945), and describes his daily activities, training, social outings, leaves, health, and general news about the war.

The correspondence describes Smart’s daily activities, training, social outings, leaves, health, and general news about the war. He writes frequently about the food at the camp and the availability and quality of items such as cigarettes, chocolate, shaving soap, socks, stationary, and other personal items; he requests various items to be sent from home. He describes the countryside, the training he receives at camp, and various aspects of his duties, and comments frequently on his health and finances.

He also writes about his social life, including outings to town, dates with women, movies, night clubs, and restaurants, as well as dances and dinners at the army camp. Smart shares with his mother his thoughts and feelings about girlfriends at home and the women he dates in Europe. He becomes particularly close with a woman from Salisbury named Elise who is engaged to another Canadian; they spend much time together and remain friends after she is married and has a child. Descriptions of his travels to places such as London and Edinburgh while on furlough are also significant.

Smart also responds to news from home and comments on the activities of family and friends in the Grassie community. He inquires about the farm work at home (much of which appears to be done by his sister) and describes farming practices he sees in England. He also comments from time to time on the role of women in the army and in society, Christianity in the army, and the general progress of and reasons behind the war.

File consists of one mounted handkerchief showing a portrait of King George V in military dress [possibly wearing the Order of the Medjidie]. The portrait is surrounded in each corner by images of the Royal Dragoons, Gordon Highlanders, Bengal Lancers and Irish Guards and a border of flags, British, French, Russian, Russian Imperial, Belgian, and one unknown flag [possibly Serbian?].

The fonds consists of land transactions, mortgages, declarations, and power of attorney documents. Some seem to have been retained as they pertain to personal or family business of members of the firm, such as documents relating to the estate of Christian Kumpf, whose daughter married A.B. McBride.

Some documents relate to well known names in the history of the area, such as David Kuntz of Kuntz Breweries and John Hoffman, for whom a survey of Waterloo was done in 1855, Thomas Hilliard, Charles Noecker, Ford S. Kumpf, etc.

Evidence of printing activity is present in legal forms printed by local booksellers and stationers for the firm. The documents contain evidence of trades and occupations of the time, including marble cutter, tailor, hotel keeper, farmer, woolen mill employee, button turner, shoe merchant, cabinet maker, tobbaconist, cigar box manufaturer, brewer, pumpmaker, telephone agent, etc. Also interesting to note is the shift to the use of a typewriter and the appearance of a female employee described as a "stenographer." Interesting also is the relative level of literacy evident in the signatures of individuals, particularly those of husbands and wives, many of whom are represented only by their "mark."

Accrual consists of material relating to the activities of the Waterloo law firm Haney, Haney, Kendall & Melville under various former names (including MacGachen & Colquhoun, and Colquhoun & McBride), as well as material relating to the family history of some of the firm's members.

Includes mostly deeds of land, mortgages, declarations, and correspondence; a will, a marriage contract, a birth registration, an insurance policy, a grant of burial lot, and other documents are also present. Accrual also contains two auction sale posters. Most of the documents were created in the local area, and some were created in England and Scotland.

Several files contain deeds and mortgages for Lot 9 and part of Lot 10 in the village of St. Jacobs, showing transfer in ownership from Levi Cress to Christian Henrich in 1884, through several other parties, to John L. Horst and his wife Selina Horst in 1953. Several files also contain material relating to a Fred Kempf and his property in Elmira. Some of the documents seem to have been retained for their relation to personal or family business of members of the firm.

Materials relating to the professional and personal life of Harry J. Byers. Includes biographical documents, including his passport and WW1 papers, ephemera, clippings and correspondence as well as approximately 270 photographs of Harry Byers and his family. Also included are photographs from Byers' time living in Russia, and a diary recounting the two years he was there.

Fonds consists of material relating to the career of H.N.B.Hynes, from his work as a student at the Univeristy of London in the late 1930s through his time as a professor of biology at the University of Waterloo until his retirement in the 1980s. Includes material relating to his work on stonefiles in the British Isles, his work for the British government in Trinidad and East Africa, his time at the University of Liverpool including work on river pollution, and his career at the University of Waterloo, including his sabbaticals in Australia.

Fonds includes notebooks containing field notes, ms. and ts. notes, publications authored by Hynes and by others, reports, correspondence, maps, and photographs.

Sketchbook belonging to Helen Edmonds, dated July 1991, containing sketches in the style of Virgil Burnett. Most sketches are drawn with brown ink and feature people, landscapes, buildings, and sculptures. The sketchbook also includes watercolour sketches accompanied by notes and quotations.

Original accession includes over 115 Heitmatbücher (German for "home books") that document the stories and histories of the villages that were inhabited by the Danube Swabians (German: Donauschwaben) in Central Europe: Romania, Hungary, and the former Yugoslavia. Many of these books also contain genealogies, some dating back to the 18th century. The Heimatbücher are a unique and rich resource for anyone interested in the history and migration of the Donauschwaben people.

An addition to the Henry Fischer Schwaben Heimatbuch Collection contains 13 items documenting the history and genealogy of Donauschwaben people living in southeastern Europe. Many of the titles are rare, having been created by and for the communities and published in only small print runs.

A genealogist, Mr. Fischer has devoted much of his life to documenting the history of his people and to collecting these Heitmatbücher.

The Doris Lewis Rare Book Room houses a sizeable special collection of rare materials related to the history of dance and ballet. The nucleus of the dance collection is the 150 items donated in 1975 by Dr. Henry Crapo, a former University of Waterloo faculty member. Dr. Crapo has continued to support the collection over the years.

Dr. Crapo's donation contains some rare and beautiful works on ballet: works by Negri, Caroso, Noverre, De la Cuisse, Arena, Dumanoir, Blasis and Bakst. The subject strengths of the collection reflect Dr. Crapo's interests in choreography and dance notation.

Of the seventeenth-century materials found here, some of the finest are Negri's Nuove inventioni de balli (Milan: 1604); Caroso's Nobilita di Dame (Venice: 1605), and Du Manoir's Le mariage de la musique avec la dance (1664).

The largest addition to the dance collection was the 300-volume collection acquired with the assistance of a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant in 1982. This collection, with imprints ranging in date from 1687 to the mid-twentieth century, adds a new research dimension in the form of illustrated works containing lithographs and engravings of the period of the Romantic ballet. The provenance of the majority of works in this collection--a portion of the personal library of George Chaffee--a leading dance writer of the twentieth century, accounts in part for its strength. Many of the books Chaffee consulted in his research for his most famous writings on ballet are now a part of the Waterloo collections.

In 1985, another grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council made it possible for the Library to purchase over two dozen books supportive of the Crapo Collection.

Special Collections & Archives has prepared a digital exhibit featuring some of the items from the Henry H. Crapo Dance Collection.

Fonds documents various memorial exhibits on display after the passing of Homer Ransford Watson, and the administration of Watson's estate by Ross Hamilton. Fonds predominately consists of correspondence addressed to Ross Hamilton regarding the management or purchase of Watson's paintings. Other textual records include pamphlets, leaflets, and two scrapbooks of clippings about memorial exhibitions about his works and life. Typescripts in the fonds cover speeches and tributes to Watson during memorial exhibitions, as well as a biography of him written by Ross Hamilton.

Materials created or accumulated by James Walker during his professional and personal life. Includes materials created during Walker's student life both as part of his Master's degree at the University of Waterloo and his Ph.D. research and dissertation at Dalhousie University; materials created as part of his teaching position at the University of Waterloo; scripts and papers written to participate in talks and events he was invited to or helped organize; records accumulated as part of his role as Chair of the History Department of the University of Waterloo and other materials related to the University's administration; and correspondence sent and received by Walker to different people and institutions.

The fonds consists of a single diary kept by Jane Urquhart from 1974 to 1981, before she began her writing career, and documents primarily several trips to Europe taken with Tony Urquhart. This diary served as a sketchbook, journal and trip diary, and contains drawings and sketches, photographs, ephemera, plant material, etc. Its 258 pages contain 71 sketches, drawings and watercolours including 27 by Tony Urquhart, 32 by Jane Urquhart, 2 by Michael Ondaatje and 10 by other artists.

Fonds consists of one scrapbook created for a class by Jeanette Harper. The scrapbook deals with journalism as a career for women and includes sections on writing, types of columns, where to get information, ways of presenting stories, national journalism associations, qualities required for an editorial assistant position, suggested reference books, and more.

Fonds consists of materials relating to the life and career of Jerzy Pindera, with a specific focus on his time in World War II and as a prisoner of war in Sachsenhausen concentration camp during the Holocaust. Includes correspondence, articles, war records and short stories, as well as tapes of interviews conducted with Pindera.

Fonds primarily focuses on Jo Davis' work as co-founder, vice-president, etc., of the Canadian women's group known as the "Voice of Women". Davis was actively involved from 1960 to 1963.

Included here are correspondence, memos, briefs, speeches and clippings which document the change in focus of the group from its early years--a change which ultimately resulted in Davis' resignation (January 22, 1963). Included on many folders or individual pieces of correspondence are Davis' notes, done in 1990, which reveal a unique perspective of early events.

The fonds also contains groups of papers documenting Davis' interests prior to her work with the Voice of Women (World Refugee Year), projects concomitant with VOW activities (Canadian Peace Research Institute and lnternational Cooperation Year) and projects subsequent to VOW activities (Harold King Farm and French Week). Small amounts of materials relate to Davis' current interests such as The Turnaround Decade Group.

Includes correspondence sent and received by Hollobon, published and draft articles written by and about Hollobon in different media, research materials, educational materials, tax information, drafts of speeches, and awards and certificates received by Hollobon throughout her career as a medical journalist. Also contains materials related to or created by Kay Rex during her personal and professional life.

Fonds consists of material relating to biology, zoology and conservation interests and activities of Dr. John D. Detwiler from to 1919-1965. Includes documentation of Ontario fish hatchery investigations and brook trout feeding experiments. This accrual consists predominately of textual materials relating to John English's activities in federally-appointed positions after 1997. It also includes materials pertaining to his academic research and publication activities. Newspaper clippings document his opinions on social issues such as homelessness, unemployment, and the rights of gays and lesbians. Herbert also wrote biographies and photographic histories of his own personal life from childhood to early adulthood. Other textual materials include published works mentioning Herbert in reviews of his works and life.

Materials relate primarily to the professional life of John Herbert, from 1940 to 1981, such as his literary works; theatre advertising, programs, and photographs; correspondences to critics, fans, his agent, and others; and reviews on his works. The literary works include drafts of his plays as well as manuscripts of his short stories and poetry.

Material documenting John Walter’s term as President of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.) Party’s Kitchener branch during 1930 to 1937. Included is correspondence concerning William Daum Euler, leaflets regarding an election campaign and anti-war messages, as well as various reference materials.

This fonds contains originals and copies of correspondence, legal instruments, licenses, manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, plans, reports, and topical files relating to the early history of the Seagram Company to 1911, and from its incorporation in 1911 to 1928, when it was purchased by the Bronfman family. The records of Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Ltd., actually stretch beyond the 1928 date, as many records emanate from the Waterloo plant and document certain of its activities to the 1950's and 1960's. The sousfonds contains information about the incorporation of the company under its various names, on imports and exports of alcohol to and from the plant, on registration of labels, and on subsidiary operations such as feed stuffs. It also includes information about the distillery site itself, in the form of topical files, reports, plans and photographs. Information on local history is also present, as the Seagram family and company figured largely in local business, political and social circles.

Includes journals and personal correspondence received by McCarthy, drafts of poems and anthologies, professional correspondence related to the publication of McCarthy's work, correspondence related to applications for grants and awards, awards received by McCarthy, interviews and articles about McCarthy, and work by and about other authors accumulated by McCarthy.

Accrual consists of materials created and accumulated by the Kaufman family, including materials created during their personal and professional lives and by Kaufman Rubber and Footwear. Includes photographs, materials relating to the William H. Kaufman Charitable Foundation, personal records, Kaufman Rubber and Kaufman Footwear records and ephemera, and three scrapbooks relating to birth control in Canada.

Includes materials relating to her personal, family and professional life, correspondence, photographs, ephemera, artifacts, clippings, notes, etc. Also includes some materials relating to her aunt Frances Kathleen Montgomery and the Canadian Women's Press Club.

Collection consists of materials collected by Kenneth Rowntree during his time in Germany as part of the Canadian Army Dental Corps at the end of the Second World War. The collection includes materials primarily created in Oldenburg including a scrapbook relating to the Hitlerjugend, propaganda photographs, a playbill, and a brochure for the Beaver Club.

It includes correspondence, committee minutes and agendas, ephemera, financial statements, publications, reports, speeches, photographs, sound recordings and video recordings and electronic records.

Accrual consists of textual, graphic, and other materials relating to the operations, activities, personnel and events of the Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation. Includes financial records, committee information, executive director files, board of directors' files and information, clippings, promotional material, publications, videocassette and sound records, electronic files and other ephemera. Most textual materials were loose when donated.

The records of K-W Oktoberfest document all aspects of the growth and day-to-day operation of the festival from its beginnings in 1969. They consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, committee minutes and reports, publications, ephemera, audio-visual materials, and other material created or received by the Corporation in the course of its business. Records from 1969-1983 are incomplete.

Fonds consists of material relating to the history and operations of the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, from its beginnings in 1878 to 1988. Also consists of historical materials on the history of Waterloo County and the Region of Waterloo including newspaper articles, slides, photographs, and negatives. Draft speeches written by Joseph Connell between 1963 and 1966, and audio cassettes containing recordings of some speeches and sessions delivered during the Young Men’s Christian Association’s (YMCA) annual meeting held in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 13-17, 1984. Also includes two audio cassettes featuring a recording of the salute to Joseph Orr Connell on his retirement from the YMCA in May 1976 and one audio cassette containing a recording of remarks given by Charles Greb at the opening of a new Waterloo Family YMCA on June 10, 1971.

Material relating to the organization, administration and operations of the Kitchener-Waterloo Young Men's Christian Association from 1906 to 1992. Includes annual reports, minutes of the Board of Directors and its committees, financial records, legal records relating to land transactions, returns to the Provincial Secretary, correspondence, and other records relating to buildings and facilities, staff and programs. Includes material relating to the K-W Y's Men's Club, Delta Phalanx, the Spokes Club and Pan Politae.

Fonds consists of correspondence to Lester Paige Breckenridge from Anson Stokes, William H. Taft, A.T. Hadley and Hiram Bingham, dating from 1912 to 1921. Three of the letters have a Yale University header and are addressed to Breckenridge in New Haven, Connecticut.
