  • Grahamstown was renamed Makhanda in June of 2018 in response to a recommendation from the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission regarding the renaming of geographic features and names as an act of symbolic repatriation. The town was renamed in honour of Makhanda ka Nexele, who led a failed attack on a British garrision in the area in 1819.
