Scope and content
File consists predominantly letters of condolence written to Clare Clark after the death of her husband Wilfred Harold Clark in 1982 and of her brother H. Spencer Clark in 1986. A copy of the card sent out by the family of Spencer Clark to acknowledge condolences expressed is also among the items in this file.
Also contained in this file are three clippings. One is an obituary for Spencer Clark, and the other two are commemorative articles which focus on his contributions as a promoter of the arts and founder of the Scarborough Guild Inn. Reference is also made to the fact that he became a member of the Order of Canada in 1983 and honorary doctor of laws at the University of Waterloo. He was also awarded an Award of Merit by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This file also contains a typescript leaf (source unidentified) which also refers to the award of a Medal by the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts to Spencer Clark.
Additionally, this file contains a card sent to Spencer Clark's family informing them that the Heart and Stroke Foundation have gratefully received a contribution from Elsie and John Stein in memory of Mr. H. Spencer Clark. A letter from the Canadian Association for Adult Education to the family of Spencer Clark contains expressions of the association's gratitude for the receipt of a contribution by Clare Clark in memory of her brother Spencer. A letter to Clare from J. Russell Hewetson (1986) appears to relate to a proposed idea for the headstone of Spencer Clark. Finally, a list of letters to be acknowledged by H. Spencer Clark is also contained in this file.
