Kitchener-Waterloo RecordContains one black leather bound notebook used by Frederick Arthur Edmonds as a diary. The notebook is ruled, contains some numbered pages, and opens lengthwise. Entries are dated and sporadic, are written in pencil, and include a chart of the names of soldiers from the 16th Platoon, with their identification number, rank, age, marital status, date of arrival in France, religion, next of kin, trade, and courses. Includes a loose leaf of paper in the front pocket of the notebook, and several blank pages. The diary entries are titled "My diary since leaving the 'Ypres Salient'", and detail the movement of troops, destinations, times leaving and arriving places, encampments, training progress, weather, distances from place to place in kilometres, locations of battles, places billeted, conditions in the trenches, descriptions of battles, objectives, conditions, attacks, general notes about casualties, tanks, mines, and descriptions of Edmonds' stay in the Paris Plaz hospital and Le Havre hospital. The diary goes up until just before Vimy Ridge, when Edmonds is invalided home.
Edmonds, Frederick ArthurFile consists of the pocket diary of Talmon Henry Rieder for the year 1901. Kept predominantly in ink, the entries frequently includes brief comments about the weather and his mood, and often includes cash account notes at the end of diary pages. No entries were logged between January 10, 1901 and April 6, 1901.
The identification page near the front of the diary partially filled out by Rieder indicates he was 24 years, with a dark complexion and weighed 134 pounds. Also included are entries regarding the sizes of his shoes, collar, cuffs, hat, shirt, gloves and underwear.
Topics of note are his burgeoning relationship with Martha Anthes, frustrations with Albert Liborius Breithaupt, business dealings with a variety of contacts including the Kaufmans, and his activities with the church-based Young People's Alliance.
