General note
After the audio reel was digitized and transcribed, staff discovered that the content of the recording contradicted the original labels on the audio reel box. Based on this new information, a revised description of the contents of side A and B of the audio reel is provided below.
Side A: A mix of Side A and Side B as originally described. The spirits of Vale Owen, Billy Sunday, and William Dynes are channeled by Thomas Lacey. The date of the recording is unknown.
Side B: A recording of Otto Smith reminiscing about his journey through Spiritualism, including his visits to Lily Dale, New York, with his wife, Nelda, purchasing a house in Lily Dale, as well as visiting Camp Chesterfield, Indiana. Smith also recounts meeting Thomas Lacey and their subsequent work together holding séances. It is believed that Otto is talking with his daughter, Evangeline, in this recording.
General note
This audio reel recording and box note contain language that is outdated, racist or otherwise harmful. This has been flagged in keeping with Special Collections & Archives' approach to language in archival descriptions, which prioritizes speaking openly about and clearly identifying problematic, harmful, and otherwise offensive records in the department’s holdings. This approach, while potentially upsetting, allows for the critical assessment and questioning of historical material by contemporary researchers.
