Administrative history
The Petworth Project was a genealogical research project begun in 1989 and funded by Father Edward Jackman and the Jackman Foundation. Its object was the Petworth Emigration Scheme, one of a number of assisted emigration schemes in southern England in the 1830's. The Petworth Emigration Committee, organized by the Rev. Thomas Sockett and sponsored by the Earl of Egremont, chartered ships and sent emigrants from England to Upper Canada between 1832 and 1837.

Disk 1 contains three WordPerfect files on one floppy disk, 3.25": Base.mrg, Basefile.bas.wp, Basefile.1st. Base.mrg contains a list of field names, 1 p. Basefile.bas.wp is a database file with field names and tags appearing, 234 p. Basefile.1st is a 243 p. document with field and record end tags appearing but no field names appearing. Note from the donors : "These files represent our main database collected from English and printed sources and from information received from descendants. The material collected by Brenda in Canadian sources is in a separate data base (sent as e-mail attachments in May 2001)".
