      General note

“Slave Day” is in reference to a fundraising initiative in which students would serve other students for a day as a means of raising funds. These types of events, the idea for which are tied to the racist, violent, and intergenerationally harmful Atlantic slave trade, were common occurrences on school campuses, including the University of Waterloo. It has been shared here in keeping with Special Collections & Archives’ approach to language in archival descriptions, which prioritizes speaking openly about and identifying racism in the department’s holdings. This approach, while potentially upsetting, allows for the critical assessment and questioning of historical material by contemporary researchers.
