Material created or accumulated by Andrew Telegdi during his tenure as a Member of Parliament related to efforts to amend citizenship legislation, particularly provisions related to the citizenship revocation process. Some of the material in this file is related to legislation introduced to amend or replace the 1977 Citizenship Act including Bill C-14 An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (adoption) and Bill C-37 An Act to amend the Citizenship Act. In addition, some of the material in this file documents Telegdi’s participation in the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration and his efforts to restore the citizenship of ‘Lost Canadians’. Records include correspondence, invitations, news releases, handwritten notes, speaking notes, travel itineraries, reports, and other textual material.
Also includes a copy of a letter to the editor released by Telegdi that was published in The Hill Times on March 6, 2006 in response to comments about him made by Warren Kinsella, a Canadian lawyer, and Liberal Party activist. Kinsella objected to Telegdi’s defense of the denaturalization and deportation case against Helmut Oberlander, a suspected war criminal.

Bill C-14 An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (adoption) was a government bill introduced in the House of Commons on May 15, 2006. Bill C-14 was intended to make amendments to the 1977 Citizenship Act. Bill C-14 received Royal Assent on June 22, 2007.

Bill C-37 An Act to amend the Citizenship Act was a government bill introduced in the House of Commons on December 10, 2007. Bill C-37 was intended to make amendments to the 1977 Citizenship Act. Bill C-37 received Royal Assent on April 17, 2008.
