General note

The Badagas are an ethno-linguistic community in India who are not currently considered a scheduled tribe. They are Shaivite Hindus who focus their worship on Shiva. Shaivites wear the Tripundra, a tilaka marking their affiliation with Shiva. A tilaka is a mark worn by Hindus, usually on the forehead.
