Biographical history
John Herbert was a Canadian playwright and theatre director. Born and raised in Toronto, Herbert attended Dora Mavor Moore's New Play Society and the National Ballet School of Canada. In 1960 Herbert founded the Garret Theatre with his sister Nana Brundage, and in 1964 wrote his most famous work, Fortune and Men's Eyes, which was in part inspired by his arrest for dressing as a woman and subsequent time spent in a youth reformatory. It was first staged in 1967 in New York and remained his most popular play. Herbert died in 2001.

File contains contains one spiral-bound manuscript 46 leaves (photocopy) of two draft chapters of material for John Herbert's autobiography. Includes author's note on the envelope: "Box D: additional items for the John Herbert archives, Porter Library, the University of Waterloo, Ontario. D12: Writing in the Sand: an autobiography by John Herbert. Enclosed: two chapters of the memoir, related to early gay life in Toronto: I. The Gay Village is 50 Years Old - 32 pages: 1995. II. Hallowe'en Night and Gay Bars - 14 pages: 1995. Manuscript (bound) of 46 pages. Note: This writing was read by John Herbert at Tallulah's Cabaret, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, in October of 1995, as part of a benefit program for the Lesbian and Gay Archives."
