General context
Jemima Cook's father James Cook (1800-1880) came to Canada from Pennsylvania and married Elizabeth Williams (1810-1874) on September 30, 1828. They settled first in Beverly Twp., Wentworth County, later in Waterloo Twp., Waterloo County; James was described in the 1861 Census of Canada as a "Gentleman." Of 15 children, 11 survived to adulthood, and the marriages of their ten daughters to young men of various backgrounds and religions helped create a family and business network that stretched from Nichol Township to North Dumfries, and on to Michigan.
