History
Robert Judd is an alumnus of the University of Waterloo who arrived on campus in September 1957 as part of the second cohort of students in the newly established Waterloo College and Associate Faculties. He began classes in October 1957, undertaking a demanding 40-hour weekly schedule held in temporary portables located in the Waterloo College (now Wilfrid Laurier University) parking lot. Judd studied Mechanical Engineering and earned a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in 1963. During his undergraduate years, he also served as the goalie for the Warriors hockey team.
In 2023, Judd donated his first school jacket to Special Collections & Archives, where it is regarded as the earliest known University of Waterloo jacket. He likely purchased the jacket in the spring of 1958, along with several classmates seeking to express school spirit and a sense of community. The jacket reflects its historical context through references to Waterloo College, the parent institution of the Waterloo College and Associate Faculties, and its white and blue colour scheme, a departure from the University of Waterloo’s black, white, and gold colours, which were not formally adopted until 1960. Judd wore the jacket until a new grey jacket became available around 1960 and retained it for many years as an alumnus. In the same year as the donation, he celebrated his sixtieth anniversary with the University.
