Diary entries begin with March 8, 1867, but this whole section is marked cancelled and is re-copied starting April 8, 1867. It begins with a record of Tobias' trip to Missouri to see his father, leaving his wife Mary Schantz (nee Moyer) with their 3-year old son Orpheus and new baby Etta, born the previous October. Tobias' father Benjamin with his second wife Margaret and children had gone to homestead near Wellville, west of St. Louis, in 1866. Tobias records his impressions of the countryside, the people, the prospects, the discouragement of all but his father with life in Missouri (March 17th). On July 2 he returns to Canada to where he is then living (near "Campden" --Grimsby within walking distance.) Throughout the diary Tobias records the weather and a daily health bulletin, letters sent and received, as well as his daily reading. He goes through periods of recording his meals. Tobias also lists all the work he does every day. He mentions setting the water for porridge, making the bed, polishing his son's shoes, carrying the baby to church, etc. On Nov. 9 he took a bath, on Nov. 25 he "did not sleep short of midnight. Was talking with Mary about my thought, troubles about religion ...". All parts of the diary have been filled with writing, dating as far as 1889 -- some accounts, recipes both household and medical (many give source), a record of the family tree -- births, marriages, deaths, transcribed songs, and an account probably written in Conestogo ca. 1875 of his spiritual trials and tribulations dating from 1862 and his efforts to achieve inner peace. This account is continued in the "other book," although it is not clear what book this referred to.

Gilbert & Co., Taxidermy and Furs, Council Bluffs, Iowa ; Blair Union Christian Endeavour Society, annotated by Carrie Belle Blaschke (unfolds to show listing of lectures for the season) ; C.F. Steckleberg, Music Teacher and Soloist, Council Bluff, Iowa. Of interest to note is that C.F. Steckleberg was head of the violin department at University of Nebraska School of Music.

Two business cards of Orpheus Moyer Schantz from when he was employed by Carson, Pirie & Company (now Carson, Pirie, Scott & Company). One card is professionally printed and shows the company's office, the other has been hand lettered on a small piece of painted canvas. In 1890 the company became Carson, Pirie & Scott, and in 1904 they moved to the landmark Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building. Now called Carson's, the company continues to be an important Chicago business.

Four collage calendars from 1898, 1900, 1910 and 1912. 1898 features a drawing of bees, grasshoppers, and reeds by Orpheus Moyer Schantz, as well as a large ribbon and the inscription "Learning by study must be won, t'was never entail'd from sire to son." The verso is inscribed "Aunt Etta, Merry Christmas from Ruth." 1900 shows a photograph of Ruth Schantz and is inscribed "A Happy Year! 1900." The verso reads "Grandpa, from Ruth, Christmas 1899." 1910 shows a painting of a woman holding an umbrella and the verso is inscribed "Grandpa Schantz from Worth." 1912 shows a photograph of a young boy taking a photograph of a young girl and is captioned "The young photographer."

Twenty drawings and sketches by Orpheus Moyer Schantz. Included are portraits, studies of animals, technical drawings for a boat, one ink drawing of the back of a woman in a gown, two drawings after C.D. Gibson- "When Doctors Disagree" and "Mr. Pipp just after dinner steps our for a few moments with a change acquaintance. He returns at 2 A.M.", and two with leaf varieties and poetry. Smaller drawings were originally found in an old men's silk handkerchief box with other ephemera.

Five invitations and one envelope for events taking place the home of Orpheus Moyer Schantz at Morton Park. These include a New Years party, an evening of entertainment, an Arabian night, and a masquerade. The envelope is address to "Mr. Austin Schantz" and originally held the invitation for the masquerade. Others listed as hosts and entertainers include:

One envelope with the name "Austin" containing one folded dinner menu. The menu is hand lettered and the recto reads " Austin T. Schantz April 21, 1894." The interior lists a series of riddles, the answers to which are not given, but which assumedly are the plates for dinner. The menu is lettered in Orpheus Schantz's hand.

Three identical "photogravure" sections of the broadsheet newspaper "The Chicago Daily News" from Saturday, October 3, 1925. The second page of the section features a radio photologue by Orpheus Moyer Schantz about the proposed establishment of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, with which Orpheus was involved. A photographic portrait of Orpheus is also present.

Five hand lettered visiting cards of Jennie Moyer, Edmund Warren Moyer, Austin Schantz, and Orpheus Moyer Schantz and F.J. Ottmax. The cards of Edmund and Jennie list them as living at 3823 Langley Ave., Chicago. The card of Orpheus and F.J. Ottmax is inscribed "A Happy New Year 1889."

Five identical decal prints from the Wild Flower Preservation Society: Illinois Chapter. The decals say "Enjoy-Do Not Destroy" around the edge and the middle shows a drawing of pink blossoms. The Wild Flower Preservation Society was a branch of the Illinois Audubon Society of which Orpheus Schantz was a board member.

Three card advertisements for Hazellet & Moyer, Cedar Falls, Iowa. The cards are advertising the purchase of Jamestown alpaca dress goods which will be sold at Hazlett & Moyer.

Hazlett and Moyer is possibly the dry goods company in which Levi Nash Moyer, Jacob Nash Moyer and Orpheus Moyer Schantz were partners in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

One fold map of Chicago and suburbs, compliments of Cremin & Brenan real estate. The map has been marked with the location of Orpheus Moyer Schantz’s home in Morton Park and Cicero. Verso reads “Cremin & Brenan 142 Dearborn St., Cor. Madison Chicago. One small leather-bound booklet with inscription "From J.N. Moyer to his Nephew Orpheus Moyer Schantz, Campden, Lincoln Co., Ont., 5th April, 1869. This booklet is the "annual circular" of the Cochran Co. and alternates blank pages with a catalogue of dry goods carried. Orpheus Schantz began to use this as a drawing book in 1878, and it contains drawings in pencil of animals both domestic and foreign, each signed and dated.
