Materials created and collected by Jim Keron pertaining to Summer Weekend 68, a multi-day event with activities and musical performances for the university community organized by the Federation of Students (now known as the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association or WUSA) from July 4-8, 1968. Some of the activities held during Summer Weekend 68 included a boat race, casino night, professional wrestling match, skateboarding and tandem bike competition, and a concert by Little Fillimore. File includes Jim Keron's application to be Chairman of Summer Weekend 68, correspondence, notes, budget statements, event descriptions, stickers, two stamps, event passes, tickets to the semi-formal dance dubbed 'Christmas in July,' and twenty posters (some duplicates). In addition, the file contains one press clipping from the Kitchener-Waterloo Record and several issues of The Chevron that featured advertisements or reviews of Summer Weekend 68. A copy of the court case, Regina v. Burko and five others, from the Ontario Magistrate’s Court dated November 27, 1968. The document includes summary, judgement, and sentence for six students at the University of Waterloo found guilty of trespassing at Eastwood Collegiate in Kitchener, ON under the Petty Trespass Act.

A black and gold ribbon bearing the designation “Orientation Committee” and featuring an illustration of the cartoon Watfor. The ribbon was given to all members of the Orientation Committee at the University of Waterloo in 1968 including Jim Keron. The committee operated under the Federation of Students (now the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association or WUSA) and was tasked with coordinating the various events and activities for incoming students.

The file also contains a button that is affixed to the ribbon bearing the inscription "U of W FROSH," accompanied by a handwritten insert that reads "FROSH POWER” as well as a black and gold beanie featuring the University of Waterloo crest and motto. These items were initially distributed to incoming students in 1968, but Keron obtained additional ones from the Federation of Students office. Keron and friends posed as new students, commonly referred to as frosh, and intentionally broke orientation rules such as ‘no sitting on the grass’ in an effort to stage a mock frosh revolt.

Material collected by Jim Keron related to Orientation 69 at the University of Waterloo including two buttons, a budget plan, three music posters advertising concerts on campus featuring Dionne Warwick, Chicago Transit Authority, and Michael Cooney, and one sticker also promoting the concert by Chicago Transit Authority.

Seven posters promoting concerts held on the University of Waterloo campus for music artists and bands including Central Nervous System, Tiny Tim, Penelope Road, Paul Butterfield, the James Cotton Blues Band, Iron Butterfly, Pozo-Seco Singers, Animal Dance, and the Barry Wills Trio.

Two small posters used as part of Larry Burko’s campaign to be elected President of the Federation of Students (now the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association, WUSA). Both posters reference the term “sandbox” or “radicals.”

These posters reflect the growing debate on campus in the 1960s around student radicals and the Radical Student Movement (RSM). While some believed that students at the University of Waterloo, and the student governing body, should engage in radical social change, others did not. Larry Burko did not support the RSM and used this perspective as part of his campaign. Burko won the election and served as the President of the Federation of Students for the 1970-1971 term.

Includes music posters, buttons, photographs, flyers, meeting minutes and other textual records as well as items related to Keron’s participation in planning Summer Weekend 68, Orientation 68, and Orientation 69.

A promotional poster for Homecoming 68 at the University of Waterloo advertising a dance organized by the Federation of Students, now known as the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA). The poster indicates that students affiliated with the Radical Student Movement (RSM) were not expected to attend the dances.

This poster reflects the growing debate on campus in the 1960s around student radicals and the RSM. While some believed that students at the University of Waterloo, and the student governing body, should engage in radical social change, others did not.

An image of three individuals holding a sign next to an outhouse located on the site where the new Faculty Club was to be built at the University of Waterloo. It is likely that one of the people in this photograph is Jim Keron however this cannot be confirmed as their faces are obscured by the sign. The outhouse was built by Jim Keron and friends in the middle of the night. The group used sheets of plywood left at the construction site of the physical education building to create the outhouse. The sign at the bottom of the image reads, “Conception Mt. Olympus Faculty Club.”

The outhouse was built by Keron and friends to satirize the growing tensions between students and faculty club members over space. Specifically, the faculty club’s desire to establish an exclusive space within the Campus Centre (now the Student Life Centre), which was contradictory to the egalitarian vision for the building held by many students. On July 17, 1968, the Faculty Club submitted a request to the Campus Centre Advisory Board to have exclusive and continuous use of the pub and formal dining room inside the Campus Centre until the new Faculty Club was built. The proposal was rejected by the advisory board however, tensions over space for students and faculty continued.[1]

Also includes three images of an unidentified individual wearing an academic gown, likely a member of the Aryan Affairs Commission (AAC) standing next to the outhouse. Members of the AAC approved the construction of the outhouse, painted the letters ‘AAC’ on the side of the unit and then posed for pictures.

Two copies of a flyer advertising an event at the pub in the Campus Centre (later known as the Bombshelter Pub) on Tuesday night. The event was likely a musical performance by a band organized by Joe Recchia, student, and concert promoter. Recchia intentionally booked bands on an off night (weekday, not the weekend) in order to secure a union rate or lower performance fee. The Tuesday-night concerts were extremely popular on campus and the pub was regularly filled with students.

Sixteen buttons collected by Jim Keron while he was an undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo. Four buttons appear to be directly connected to Keron’s activities at the university and include a name badge possibly from orientation activities, a Sandbox Committee name badge, a homecoming promotion, and a button for the RSM (Radical Student Movement). The remaining twelve buttons feature political statements, especially connected to the Vietnam War, or advertisements.

Materials related to the Aryan Affairs Commission (AAC) gathered by Jim Keron, likely when he was a member of the AAC. Includes the meeting minutes of the Aryan Affairs Commission (AAC) privy council held on June 6, 1968; June 10, 1968; June 20, 1968; July 8, 1968; July 15, 1968, and August 21, 1968. File also includes correspondence, an application for membership, a cheque book, sweatshirt order forms, a special occasion liquor license, a petition to disband the privy council, a receipt for stamps, and handwritten notes.

Furthermore, the file contains a wood-mounted rubber stamp with a handle. The rubber stamp die features the group's name, Aryan Affairs Commission, in small lettering at the top and the words "rubber stamp" prominently displayed in the center. Members of the AAC likely used this stamp to mark posters or flyers on bulletin boards around campus to satirize university administration requirements that such materials be stamped for approval.
