History
William Henry Pope Clement was born May 13, 1858 to Reverent Edwin and Mary C. Pope Clement. He studied law at the University of Toronto and was called to the Ontario bar in 1880. He went to be a member of and to work as a legal advisor for the Yukon Council. In 1901 he joined the British Columbia bar and worked for several years in Grand Forks before becoming a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1906. Specializing in Canadian constitutional law and Dominion history, he authored two books: The Law of the Canadian Constituion (1892) and History of Canada (1897).
Clement married Elsie Luly Main (1862-1948), of Brampton, Ontario, in 1889 and together they had three children: Mary Pope Shirley (1894-1977), Caleton Main (1896-1917), and Elsie Bonallyn Dawson (1899-1954). He died suddenly at his Vancouver home on May 3, 1922 and was buried at Mountain View Cemetery.
